The next weekend, I grabbed a friend of mine and we headed out to Mellow Yellow for a night of laughter, excitement, and, of course, good food.įrom the minute we arrived, the waitstaff greeted us with inviting smiles and took us to our large table outside, where in less than a minute, our waiter brought us ice water and complimentary chips and guacamole to welcome us to the restaurant. I was taking a leisurely stroll down 53rd street on a random day in the fall quarter, soaking up the warm weather, when I was drawn to the colorful signs in the restaurant's window and its massive stand in the walkway advertising champagne cocktails and frozen margaritas. I stumbled upon Mellow Yellow in my freshman year at the University. There were options for Mexican food with burritos and tacos American with steaks and burgers and Italian with creamy pasta and freshly baked garlic bread. Although the restaurant mainly specialized in ‘70s fare like quiches, crepes, and baked potatoes, it really touched every type of cuisine. It functioned similarly to a classic diner, with an enormous menu that had something for everyone.
There are other better restaurants with much better service nearby on the same street or in the neighborhood so don't bother coming here.Mellow Yellow opened its doors to Hyde Park residents in 1976, and since that day, it has been a popular place for brunch and dinner. I was so hungry that I can't tell if the food was good or bad. I am puzzled how they can even still be open. REALLY?! Isn't that his job? I was very disappointed. In fact, the gratuity was already added even though we received the worst service!!! When our friend called over the host/gm to complain, the host/gm said he couldn't do anything about it. When we got our bill there was NO discount. WHAT?!?! You tell us AFTER the other three people are served so now we had to waste another 30 minutes to wait for our new order to be ready and eat our food while the other 3 people who already ate their food waited for us. The waitress apologized but said that the "chef" just told her that they had run out of chicken so the two orders of fried chicken and waffles had to change our orders. Unfortunately, only three orders out of five was served. Meanwhile, our order was taken, then we settled in to wait for a good 30 minutes for our food to be ready. When we were finally seated in the other room which also had empty tables, I noticed that a group of older women sitting at the next table had some problem with their bill in which it took the host/gm more than ONE HOUR to rectify. If he has been around for awhile, he would know that the day of the Silver Room Block Party would be a busy day so he should have hired EXTRA help. One customer calmly suggested that he seat the customers so we can at least order drinks and sit down instead of standing around the entrance awkwardly but no he repeated his lame excuse. So that meant more that 10 people were clogging up the only narrow entrance/exit of the restaurant.

The worst service during the Silver Room Block Party! They should have stayed closed instead of trying to make money off people.
